This trek offers an unforgettable immersion into Bhutan's natural beauty.

Day 1

Menchugang to Dhur Village

Your adventure begins in Menchugang, perched at an elevation of 2,950 meters. The trek kicks off with a 1.5-hour journey to Dhur Village, which sits at 2,900 meters. Dhur is home to the nomadic Kheps and Brokpas, two ancient communities with distinct languages and cultures. As you traverse the trail, you'll come across an old water-driven flour mill near Chutigang, a testament to the traditional way of life in Dhur.

Insider Tips: Many itineraries include Dhur Village, and a newly extended farm road now reaches Karo. From Karo, it's a mere three-hour trek to Shona. Camping for the night will be at Dhur Village, allowing you to immerse yourself in its unique atmosphere.

Day 2

Dhur Village to Drangela Pass

On the second day, you'll embark on an uphill trek through ancient forests. The trail winds through lush hemlock, fir, and spruce trees, interspersed with vibrant rhododendrons that bloom spectacularly in April and May. As you continue, you'll also encounter expansive bamboo forests, adding to the scenic beauty of the trek.

After several hours of hiking, you'll reach Drangela Pass at 3,600 meters, then ascend further to Kitephu Ridge at 3,870 meters. From here, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Mount Gangkhar Puensum, the world's highest unclimbed peak at 7,541 meters, along with the stunning Himalayan range and the valleys below. Your campsite for the night will be near Kitephu Ridge, providing a serene backdrop for rest and reflection.

Day 3

Drangela Pass to Tharpaling Goemba

The third day involves descending trails leading to several impressive monasteries, including Zambhalha, Choedrak, and Tharpaling. Choedrak Monastery, also known as Choedrak Hermitage, houses 100 Avalokiteshvaras in the form of Chukchizhey (eleven heads). This monastery is considered one of Bhutan's most powerful spiritual sites, as Guru Rinpoche is believed to have meditated here for an extended period.

The trail continues along Kikila Ridge, following the Royal Heritage Trail through scenic hills and forests. This route offers stunning views of Jakar Dzong. You have the option to conclude your trek here or descend via Samtenling Lhakhang to Domkhar in the Chhume Valley. Alternatively, you can make a northeast detour, climbing back over the ridge behind Tharpaling Goemba to head towards Jakar, descending through dense forests.
